Police said the victim is a homeless man in his 60s, but have not identified him.

Locals in the area told NBC 7, they knew him by the name of Ras who would sell incense on the sidewalk. They described him as a mellow, soft-spoken person who never bothered anyone.

"He always gave people advice. He was a tall guy. He used to stand by that telephone pole right there," said his friend Keiko Cybbryone. "I gave him 20 bucks to get something to eat one time. He didn't bother nobody. That is why everybody is upset."

Homicide investigators said the man suspected of stabbing the victim fled before officers arrived. He was wearing a white or gray hooded sweatshirt and baggy blue jeans.

"What we know right now, this does appear to be an unprovoked attack," said SDPD Homicide Lt. Mike Holden.

Holden said it appeared the victim and the suspect had a conversation before the attack.

Holden emphasized they are in the early stages of the investigation and do not know the motive for the stabbing.

NBC 7 spoke to a witness who said he caught a glimpse of the suspect.

"I witnessed the man running away," said Luke Avery. "Yeah it concerns me, and I hope that the man who did it is apprehended."

Investigators are checking surveillance cameras in the area for possible leads.
