Dateline Special: The John Gardner Case

For the first time, we are hearing key details in the investigation into the disappearances of local teenagers Chelsea King and Amber Dubois.

The NBC investigative show “Dateline” spoke to the main players in the case of convicted killer John Gardner.

San Diegans will learn things we didn't know when the case first broke including what happened the day Amber Dubois’ mother, Carrie McGonigle visited her daughter's killer in jail

She asked Gardner, “Walk me through your day,” McGonigle told “Dateline.”

“He started you know in the morning him and his girlfriend got in a fight,” she said explaining how Gardner told her he took off in a car to blow off steam.

“He happened to drive the street where Amber was taken,” said McGonigle. “Why she was on that street I don't know.”

“Dateline” correspondent Keith Morrison also talks with a close friend of Gardner who reveals details about the killer’s childhood.

Morrison sits down with investigators who discuss Gardner’s demeanor during original questioning about Chelsea King’s disappearance as well as the investigator who was with Gardner when he led police to the location of Amber Dubois’ body.

“Dateline” will air the two-hour program beginning at 8 p.m. Friday.
