Crews Knock Down East County Brush Fire

Firefighter Injured In Campo Blaze

A firefighter was hurt Tuesday while battling a blaze that broke out near Campo on Tuesday morning.

Cal Fire officials said the Shockey Fire began at about 2:45 a.m near Shockey Truck trail and state Route 94 around.  The flames forced 300 homes to be evacuated.  Firefighting aircraft performed drops on the fire, which burned just over 200 acres.

Michelle Aston said she had three minutes to grab her belongings and flee the flames.

"My neighbor has a line of sight to our house.  She calledus and said, get up and run, now.  And we did," Aston said.

Evacuation centers were set up at Mountain Empire High School and the Portrero library.

The Harris Fire in 2007 started near where the Shockey fire began. The Harris Fire burned 90,440 acres, destroyed 548 structures -- valued at more than $28 million -- and cost $21 million to fight. There were eight civilian fatalities and 40 firefighter injuries.
