Crawford HS Senior Dies After Highway Crash

"We were gonna graduate together.  We were gonna go to prom together," said a friend of a high school senior killed in a crash over the weekend.

Lucia Lopez, 17, was one of five people ejected from a vehicle onto Highway 94 near College Grove Way Sunday morning.  She died later at Scripps-Mercy Hospital.  California Highway Patrol officers said the car went up onto an embankment and rolled several times.  No one was wearing a seat belt.

Julio Ruelas, 22, and Ramon Garcia Junior,19, both of San Diego, were also killed in the crash.  Two others were injured.

Today, a group of about a dozen friends of Lopez's gathered at Scripps Mercy hospital for a small memorial.  They say she planned to graduate from  Crawford High School  this spring.

"She was gonna graduate with a 4.0 (grade point average), and that's really what her goal was always," said Elizabether Flores, a friend of Lopez's.

Her friends are planning some sort of fundraiser to help the family.

CHP investigators say there is evidence to indicate alcohol may have played a role in the crash.  They'll wait for toxicology tests before they can be sure.

"I hope we all take it in mind now and think about what we do," said Flores.
