Street Racing Kills Escondido Man: CHP

The crash on I-15 was the result of racing between two cars according to witnesses

An Escondido man was killed racing with another car on a North County highway witnesses told  investigators.

Derek Anthony Millsap, 22, was killed when his Nissan 370Z hit a light pole along southbound Interstate 15 near Via Rancho Parkway just before 5 p.m. Tuesday.

California Highway Patrol officers believe Millsap was racing at the time of the crash.

Witnesses told CHP officers the Millsap’s Nissan was stopped on Via Rancho Parkway at a stoplight next to Black Nissan Titan with tinted windows.

When the light turned green, the two cars started to race on the ramp according to witnesses.

It was then that Millsap lost control of his car and crashed into the pole before crossing several lanes of the freeway and striking the center median.

A tire broke off the Nissan and hit another car traveling on the highway causing minor damage.

As of this time, drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor according to the CHP.

The driver of the Black Nissan Titan left the scene of the collision.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information on the Black Nissan Titan that left the scene is asked to call the California Highway Patrol at (858) 637-3800.
