Crash Sends Semi-Truck 50 Feet Down Embankment in University City

A crash on northbound Interstate 805 sent a semi-truck off an embankment in University City Wednesday.

The semi-truck crashed into a white van parked on the shoulder of northbound I-805 near the Nobel Drive exit at about 2:50 a.m., California Highway Patrol said.

The crash caused the truck to lose control and the tractor-trailer was sent over the embankment's edge and about 50 feet into a canyon.

Firefighters pulled the driver out of the vehicle and he was able to walk up the hill to the freeway on his own. He was taken to a nearby hospital with unknown injuries.

No one inside the van was hurt.

A Sig Alert was issued for northbound I-805 at about 3:30 a.m. and was in effect for nearly two-and-a-half hours before the roadway was reopened, though crews still had hours of work ahead of them to get the truck out.

Two tow trucks were being used to pull the tractor-trailer back up the embankment. The shoulder remained closed as crews worked.

They estimated the truck weighed nearly 60,000 pounds. It was hauling about 30,000 pounds-worth of an unknown product when it crashed.

Traffic in the area was slower than usual, but the commute time was only mildly affected, according to NBC 7's Whitney Southwick.
