Couple Nabbed for $1.34 M in Fraud

A husband and wife who owned a physical therapy center in San Diego have been arrested on suspicion of filing false claims for $1.34 million in Medicare payments.

The state attorney general's office says Sanjay Patel and his wife Leena were arrested in Connecticut before boarding a plane to India.

The couple is accused of paying unsuspecting seniors $100 to obtain their health insurance information and signatures on blank medical forms. Prosecutors allege the pair used the information to submit claims for procedures that were never performed.

The two are charged with 13 counts, including grand theft, identity theft, health benefits fraud, receiving stolen property and money laundering. They face up more than 12 years in prison if convicted.
