County to Consider Cuts

County supervisors are being asked to lay off 66 workers and eliminate 517 vacant positions to save a combined $45.2 million.

The proposal up for consideration next Tuesday comes from Walt Ekard, the county's chief administrative officer, who says the action is needed to "maintain fiscal stability."

"Due to the current state and federal economic situation, there is an immediate need for strong and proactive action," Ekard wrote in the memo to the Board of Supervisors.

The county has been trimming its work force for the last couple of years in response to declining revenue, and officials have said more cuts were coming.
