Cops: Drunk Driver Slammed into 4 Teens in VW Bug

Updated: The driver of a vehicle that crossed into oncoming traffic and smashed head-on into another car in Rancho San Diego, causing five injuries, was arrested for alleged drunken driving, a California Highway Patrol dispatcher said Sunday.

The accident happened near the Cottonwood Golf Course on Willow Glen Drive and Steele Canyon Road around 7:20 pm Saturday night.

A solo driver in a Toyota Corolla was driving east on Willow Glen Drive and drifted over into the westbound lane, missing three other cars before hitting a Volkswagen Beetle carrying four teenagers, CHP officials said.

When officials arrived at the scene they found the solo driver trapped in the car. Four teenagers suffered injuries ranging from minor to life threatening.  Initial reports had said as many as 12 people were involved in the collision.

“Our best message to the public is slow down, especially on these roads," said San Miguel Fire Battalion Chief Andy Menshek.

The names of the victims were not released.
