Two men have been convicted in the abduction and torture of a Mexican businessman who testified that he was held for ransom at a house in Chula Vista in June 2007.
Deputy District Attorney Mark Amador told the San Diego Union-Tribune he hopes the verdict will send a message to other would-be kidnappers.
Jorge Rojas Lopez and Juan Francisco Estrada-Gonzalez were found guilty of kidnapping for ransom and a special-circumstance allegation that they caused bodily harm to the victim.
The two 28-year-old suspected members of a Tijuana drug cartel could face life in prison. Prosecutors charged five other men in connection with the incident.
Eduardo Gonzalez Tostado testified that he was shackled in a coat closet until FBI SWAT teams rescued him.
