College Student Dies During Run

Deputies found the 21-year-old man unresponsive on a mountain Thursday night

A 21-year-old college student from Valley Center was found unresponsive after going out for a run near his home Thursday night, according to the San Diego Medical Examiner’s office.

The medical examiner said student and church pre-school teacher Collin Barnes lived with his parents in a rural home in Valley Center.

On Thursday evening Barnes told his parents he was going for a run up to Flat Top Mountain on Paseo Robles to take pictures of the sunset, but he never returned.

Barnes' family called the sheriff’s department for help and deputies launched a search in the area.

At around 9:30 p.m., deputies found the man unresponsive on the mountain, according to the ME report.

Valley Center Fire Department officials tried resuscitative efforts, but Barnes was pronounced dead at the scene.

An examination has yet to be completed and will determine the victim's cause of death.

Foul play does not appear to be suspected and was not mentioned at all in the ME report released Friday night.
