Coaster May Ban Booze

Transit directors consider whether to ban alcohol on Coasters.

Transit directors decided Thursday not to decide yet on whether to ban alcohol on Coaster Trains.

Apparently, riders have complained about the amount of trash and intoxicated people on the commuter trains after Padres games. So many complained, that the transit directors took up a proposal to ban alcohol from the trains completely.

Directors, on a 5-3 vote, decided to send the proposal back to committee on the grounds that a blanket ban punishes the majority of riders who imbibe responsibly, according to the North County Times.

Several board members wanted to avoid punishing those transit riders who want to enjoy a glass of wine or a beer on the way home from work. Transit director and Encinitas Councilman Jerome Stocks told the paper that he would like to see an alcohol ban on return Padres trips or perhaps even the last train of the evening, instead of an over all ban.

The district will examine the issue and come back with a new version at its June 18 meeting.
