21 Detained on Point Loma Coast

Authorities took into custody undocumented Mexican immigrants who escaped on foot in Point Loma

Coast Guard officials launched a search and rescue mission after spotting a smuggling boat carrying several individuals in Point Loma Friday morning.

Officials received a call about a beached Panga boat at about 7:30 a.m. and immediately launched their helicopter on a search and rescue mission. Coast Guard found two of the boat’s occupants in the water, and pulled them to shore on a jet ski.

The Coast Guard officials say 21 undocumented mexican immigrants escaped on foot, and were later found near Point Loma Nazarene’s Young Hall.

Border Patrol agents took six women and 15 men.

They were all taken to a local border patrol station for further investigation.

Just last week, another Panga boat was found off the coast of Carlsbad with bundles of drugs inside. Agents say marine smuggling is a growing problem.
