The Mayor is changing the bulbs on thousands of street lights across the city, all in an effort to save the city money.
Over the next 17-months, the city will replace 35,000 sodium-vapor streetlights with energy-efficient induction lights.
The change in street lamps will lead to a brighter, higher-quality light and they hope to reduce the city's energy and streetlight-maintenance costs by $2.2 million annually, according to city officials.
"This project was a major win for San Diego, by every measure, financially, environmentally, and from a public-safety perspective," Mayor Sanders said.
The installation of the street lamps cost the city $16 million.
The construction company in charge of the project says everything will be recycled, up to 610 tons of material.
