City of Vista to Phase Out Red Light Cameras

The Red Light Photo Enforcement Program was first implemented in 2004 in Vista

The City of Vista has voted to end a red light camera program during Tuesday night’s city council meeting.

The Red Light Photo Enforcement Program was first implemented in 2004—the city outfitted five intersections with cameras at signals to monitor drivers who ran red lights. According to the City of Vista, crashes that were caused by red-light violations decreased by 57 percent since the program was put into place.

The cameras snap a picture of any violators along with the date, time of day, and the time elapsed since the signal turned red and the speed of the vehicle. Drivers are then mailed a ticket after a review of the pictures.

But not all members of the community were on board with the installation of cameras.

On Tuesday, three of five council members voted “yes” to ending the program. It will be phased out by January 31, 2017.
