City Council Elects New President

The San Diego City Council has a new leader.

New Councilman Todd Gloria nominated City Councilman Ben Hueso for president, the voiceofsandiego.org reported. Hueso's office announced Tuesday that was been elected to the position by a 6-2 vote. Hueso replaces the termed-out Scott Peters.

As council president, the District 8 councilman will chair the council meetings, schedule items for review and nominate people to serve as committee chairs and vice chairs.

The dissenting votes were cast by new Councilwoman Sherri Lightner, who nominated Donna Frye, and Frye herself.

The council president is a one-year position.
