City Council Approves Budget

About 200 city workers will lose their jobs after the city council passed Mayor Jerry Sanders budget to close a $179 million deficit.

The council voted 7-1 with City Councilmember Carl DeMaio casting the no vote.

Many of the 200 jobs will come from the civilian ranks of the police and fire departments.

Cuts also include police equestrian patrols in Balboa Park which will be suspended and the number of canine teams will be reduced.

The budget was passed last Wednesday but wasn't final pending discussions with labor unions affected by the cuts.
