City Championship Goes To SDSU

But Not By Much

It was supposed to be easy for San Diego State. They were 7-point favorites against the University of San Diego. They'd won seven straight games against their cross-town rivals. They're ranked 24th in the nation and have won 35 straight games against teams from California.

However, as Steve Fisher warned during the week, the Toreros are a whole lot better than most people think they are.

"(USD) is confident right now," said Fisher, "and they have reason to be."

USD proved their close loss to New Mexico in The Pit was not a fluke, nearly knocking off SDSU  in a 65-64 Aztecs win Thursday night at Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Toreros guard Duda Landaze had the ball in his hands for one final shot and just missed a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded. Landaze and his backcourt mates Johnny Dee and Christopher Anderson combined to score 55 of the Toreros' 64 points.

The Aztecs were led by senior guard Xavier Thames, who had a team-high 17 points, but their dominance came close to the basket. SDSU outrebounded USD 44-29, led by Josh Davis and his 15 boards.

The Aztecs move to 6-1 on the year while the Toreros fall to 7-3.
