Suspicious Device Reported in Chula Vista

A suspicious device discovered early Monday in Chula Vista turned out to be harmless, according to the Chula Vista Police Department.

Police were called to a home near on Whitney Street near Hilltop Drive around 11:20 a.m.

A landlord was checking out a property when the device was discovered, police said.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Bomb Arson Team was called. A robot was sent in to examine the device, and the bomb squad later determined it was not explosive, police said.

Officers set up a perimeter around the residence in question. Five homes in close proximity were evacuated, deputies said.

Whitney Street was blocked from Carla to Claire during the investigation.

The home was located about half a block from Hilltop High School. Students leaving the campus on minimum day could use only the H and I Street exits, officials said. Traffic was expected to return to normal around 1 p.m.

Police said there will be no criminal investigation. They did not say exactly what the suspicious device was.
