Chula Vista Man Gets 4 Months in Jail For Counterfeiting World Cup Jerseys

Defendant sold over $100,000 in counterfeit merchandise

A District Court judge sentenced a Chula Vista man to four months in jail followed by five months in a halfway house for selling over $100,000 in counterfeit World Cup jerseys.

Clemente Leon, who pleaded guilty in May, sold jerseys valued between $120,000 and $320,000 on Amazon and his website playerasfutbol.com using Paypal and other methods.

After receiving a Cease and Desist letter from Nike in August 2013, Leon continued to import counterfeit jerseys from China.

He modified the jerseys in his garage, sewing on patches and stenciling players’ names to the back to get a higher price.

In addition to his jail time, Leon must give up $50,000 of his earnings and all counterfeit merchandise seized by federal agents.
