Woman Breaks Leg Trying to Escape Flames

One woman broke her leg while trying to escape the flames from a garage fire in Chula Vista early Monday.

Neighbors described waking up to what they believe were explosions from inside the unit on Trouville Lane just before 5 a.m.

“I came outside my garage and it was right next to my house so that really scared me a lot,” said  resident Merced Johnson.

Chula Vista firefighters arrived to discover a parked car on fire inside the unit’s garage. Flames and smoke were rising up to the second level of the multiple-story condo.

Officials said one woman living in the condo broke her leg as she tried to evacuate.

Fire crews launched a search and rescue team to make sure there were no other fire victims inside the condo.

Dozens of residents had to leave their homes for more than an hour while fire crews got the fire under control and kept it from spreading to other units.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
