Neighbors raced to try and save the victim in a deadly car fire in Chula Vista early Tuesday.

Residents near East Palomar Street and Santa Andrea Street heard several loud booms around 3:30 a.m. and ran outside to find a car on fire.

The vehicle appears to have struck a tree and split in two.

Witnesses described the flames as reaching 20 to 30 feet in the air. They reported explosions that sounded like lightning.

Several people rushed out in their underwear and pajamas to help pull a man out of car.

One person died in the crash. He’s identified only as an Asian male in his 20s Chula Vista police officers told NBC 7.
