Chase Suspects Escape During Border Chaos

Suspects able to cross border despite traffic buildup from roof collapse

During the chaos of a roof collapse at the San Ysidro border crossing, suspects managed to elude capture and make their way into Mexico Wednesday afternoon.

Police were pursuing the car on the I-805 until the suspects driving the car crossed the border via the bypass lane, according to Officer Bernard Gonzales with the Chula Vista Police.

The chase began on E St., then continued onto the north-bound I-805. Somehow, the car turned around and headed south on the I-805, reaching speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. The suspects were attempting to hide something during the pursuit, Bernard said.

The suspects were able to cross the border, despite a major accident involving a collapsed roof at the San border Ysidro crossing.

Bernard said the suspects are currently in Mexico. It is unclear what happened to them after they crossed the border.

California Highway Patrol officers assisted CVPD.
