Just four years ago, in the 2011 NFL Draft, then-Chargers general manager A.J. Smith selected eight players.
Exactly one of them, 1st round pick Corey Liuget, is still with the team. The rest either never made an impact or have signed on with different franchises (at the time of this writing, 7th-rounder Andrew Gachkar was still available to return but being courted by at least two other clubs).
Within the last few days 2nd rounder Marcus Gilchrist left for a 4-year contract with the Jets, and 3rd round selection Shareece Wright signed a 1-year, $4 million contract with the 49ers.
Of the rest of the group, Jonas Mouton, Vincent Brown, Jordan Todman and Stephen Schilling, only Brown has had even a modicum of success in the NFL, but injuries have kept him from performing consistently.
Gilchrist never really settled in at corner or safety. It was a long shot that he'd get a longer stay in San Diego. Wright became a solid starter and turned himself in to one of the better tackling cornerbacks in the league in 2014. But, a spate of pass interference penalties and the re-signing of Brandon Flowers made Shareece the odd man out in the Chargers secondary.
The Bolts have already signed former Dolphin Jimmy Wilson to fill Gilchrist's spot and have Steve Williams in the pipeline to possibly take over as a reserve CB behind Flowers and Jason Verrett.
