Catch a Silvery, Slimy Critter

Grunion invade beaches to spawn

Grunion run season is here and the silvery, slimy critters of the sea will invade our southern California beaches to spawn, according to the California Department of Fish & Game.

Dig in and use your hands on June 8, 2009, when grunion may surface from 9:50 p.m. to 11:55 p.m. -- the second hour is usually better according to Fish & Game. During open season, a fishing license is required for those over 16-years old to capture grunion.

Naturalists from the Birch Aquarium at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography will guide beachgoers watching the grunion run at 9:30 p.m.

One of the best ways to find out which beaches have had recent runs is to call the state and county beach lifeguards who can often tell if spawning has occurred.
