Carlsbad Park Security Cameras Turned Off

Dozens of cameras installed recently at a Carlsbad park give residents who go there peace of mind. There’s only one problem – they’re not running.

The 32-acre Alga Norte Community Park cost $40 million dollars to build two years ago, which included the cost of the cameras.

“What's the point of having them there, it's almost like, I don't understand it,” Encinitas resident Nina Dalzell weighed in. “It definitely takes away that sense of peace for us.”

City officials say the plan was to run a pilot program to evaluate use of the cameras as there are many considerations, including privacy issues, how long the digital video should be stored and the technical issues and costs that go along with their use.

I suspect that any privacy issue would be superseded by the safety of a kid,” Carlsbad resident Chris Schmidt said. “If something happened and you catch it on film and maybe catch the perpetrator, I'd rather have that happen than have them not on.”

It turns out besides a testing period the cameras were never running. City Officials are currently working with police and attorneys to review exactly how the cameras will be used.
