Car Submerged in Tijuana River

Emergency crews worked together Thursday morning to fish a submerged car – and its driver – from the waters of Tijuana River Valley.

Officials from several agencies, including San Diego Lifeguards, the San Diego Police Department (SDPD), San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD) and U.S. Border Patrol, responded to the rescue call near Dairy Mart Road and Camino de la Plaza at around 10:45 a.m.

There, they discovered a vehicle inside the Tijuana River. The driver was able to safely escape from the submerged car, unharmed.

Border Patrol officials say the driver was possibly wanted for a car crash associated with an earlier crime.

Lifeguards scoured the area for a possible passenger and the SDFD’s helicopter searched by air, too.

The river rescue took place in the midst of heavy El Niño storms that swept San Diego County this week.
