Car Strikes CHP Cruiser on I-15 MTS Bus Lanes in City Heights

A car struck a California High Patrol cruiser Sunday afternoon in the bus lane on Interstate 15 in City Heights, authorities said.

The accident happened shortly before 2 p.m. in the new San Diego Metropolitan Transit System bus lane on northbound I-15, south of University Avenue, the CHP said.

One of the wheels came off the vehicle in the crash. Paramedics and San Diego Fire-Rescue units responded to the scene though no injuries have been reported.

The MTS bus lanes lead to the city's first freeway-level transit stations at the University and El Cajon avenues overpasses. The lanes were opened in March for bus traffic only but many drivers mistake them for carpool lanes.

Despite several large signs at the entrances alerting drivers that the dedicated lanes are for buses only, many riders say they see drivers using them on a daily basis.

The lanes are separated from regular traffic lanes by pylons and concrete barriers with CHP and San Diego police cruisers regularly posted to catch drivers illegally using the lanes.
