Driver Flees Car After Pursuit

Police arrested a man following a vehicle pursuit on Tuesday morning.

Around 10:30 a.m. a male driver and two women inside a '98 Honda Civic raced through Encanto, Lomita, South Bay Terraces and Paradise Hills. The women exited the vehicle at an unknown location.

At one point the driver attempted to ram police vehicles with the Honda. He also struck a motorcycle in National City.

The driver then left the car in National City on East 17th Street. The man attempted to contact a family member who lived in the building, said Lt. Darryl Hoover.

Police arrested the man shortly after setting up a perimeter and he was taken into custody. He has been identified as 26-year-old Dominic Martinez.

Officers initially tried to pull the driver over because when they ran the plates, they discovered it was a stolen car. After initiating a traffic stop, Martinez failed to yield which is when the pursuit began, said Hoover.

“We saw all these police cars,” said Hans Chung who was working nearby. “I didn’t know what to think.”

The women who fled the car are outstanding and police are investigating.

Martinez is charged with auto theft, possession of stolen property, evading police, hit-and-run and assault with a deadly weapon.
