'I Panicked': Brakes Failure Sends Jeep Into Portion of San Diego Bay

A car was sent into a portion of San Diego Bay Thursday night when its brakes failed at a National City boat launch park.

Marcos Morales and his passenger were able to safely get out of the Jeep before it hit the water near Pepper Park boat launching facility at about 10:50 p.m.

The car was going about 10 miles per hour when the brakes failed.

"I panicked and I tried to tug the gear into neutral and it wasn’t tugging," Morales said.

With little options left, both men decided to get out of the car and let it keep going, he said.

Neither was hurt but Morales said the situation could have been worse.

"What about if those brakes went off on the freeway? I could’ve been dead."

The car was completely submerged in the Sweetwater Channel, which leads into San Diego Bay.

Firefighters said they would stay on scene until the car was pulled out of the water.
