3 Firefighters Hurt When Engine Rolls Over in Bonsall

Three firefighters have been released from the hospital after their engine rolled over while responding to a call in the Bonsall area, Cal Fire San Diego confirmed Friday.

The firefighters' engine veered off Old Highway 395 south of Camino Del Rey and landed in an embankment about 20 feet below the roadway at about 6:15 a.m., California Highway Patrol said.

No other vehicles were believed to be involved in the crash but an investigation was ongoing, Cal Fire spokesperson Issac Sanchez said.

The three firefighters inside were able to get out of the crashed vehicle with minor injuries, CHP said. All were transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation, Sanchez said.

The engine was assigned to the Deer Springs area and may have been responding to a report of a fire, Sanchez said.

Sanchez said while CHP will conduct an investigation into the crash, Cal Fire would also be conduction their own investigation.

"It’s always a big deal when we have an accident like this, Sanchez said."Anytime we have firefighters that are involved in an incident it's concerning not only at a personal level but at a professional. We want to learn what happened here so we can improve our operations."

Traffic on Old Highway 395 was reduced to only one lane due to the crash, Cal Fire said.

The rollover crash happened amid light rainfall in the North County and after a night of heavy downpours but it was not yet clear if weather was a contributing factor in the crash, Sanchez said.
