An Amtrak train fatally hit a pedestrian in Carlsbad Thursday morning, the San Diego Sheriff's Department (SDSO) confirmed.
The train struck the pedestrian just after 11 a.m. near the intersection of Avenida Encinas and Ponto Drive.
A southbound Amtrak train was traveling at approximately 86 miles per hour when the engineer saw a pedestrian on the tracks.
The train immediately applied the emergency braking system and warning horn, but was unable to stop before striking the pedestrian.
The pedestrian did not respond to the train's horn warnings, witnesses said, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Train service was delayed for a couple of hours, but is now back on schedule.
The Sheriff's Transit Enforcement Unit will handle the investigation.
