Firefighters Battle Blaze That Threatened Homes

Firefighters gained the upper hand Sunday on a brush fire that burned in a canyon just north of the city limits of National City and threatened homes, firefighters said.

The blaze was reported shortly before 11 a.m. between Cervantes and Alta Vista avenues in an Alta Vista-area canyon and charred eight acres.

Most of the fire was knocked down by 11:55 a.m. β€œwith the exception of some flames on the eastern side of the canyon,” a dispatcher said.

Water-dropping helicopters aided San Diego, National City and Chula Vista firefighters on the ground.

The flames threatened some homes along the canyon rim, but no structural damage was reported, according to a dispatcher.
