Brush Fire Sparks near Mission Valley Riverbed

Firefighters responded Monday night to a brush fire burning in a Grantville riverbed.

The fire could be seen along Camino Del Rio North in Grantville at about 7:30 p.m. Monday night, according to the San Diego Fire Rescue.

Additional support was requested to help battle the flames, which were burning in an area difficult to access. Smoke could be seen from the freeways nearby, as well as a 24-Hour Fitness, where crews assembled as they battled the flames.

As of about 8 p.m. 1 acre had burned. The fire was burning at a slow rate of spread, but with heavy fuel in the brush around the riverbed.

The fire department requested trolley service be temporarily shut down due to the proximity to the fire. MTS shut down service between the Qualcomm and Mission San Diego stations. The transportation system is implementing a bus bridge for passengers in need.

The San Diego Fire Department requested that CHP close the southbound I-15 to westbound I-8 ramp.

About an hour after the fire started, crews had knocked it down.
