University City Fire Closes I-805/SR-52 Ramps

A vegetation fire burned up a hillside toward homes north of San Diego Wednesday and prompted the closure of onramps at a major highway interchange.

The fire sparked at 2 p.m. near Genesee and Interstate 805 in University City.

California Highway Patrol officers first reported the fire was burning up a hillside toward a row of homes.

CHP officers then closed all lanes along northbound I-805 to westbound State Route 52. Twenty minutes later, CHP reported southbound lanes on I-805 were closed at SR-52.

San Diego Fire Rescue crews estimate the fire burned approximately a quarter of an acre.

As of 2:45 p.m., the fire was determined to be out.  CHP still has the portion of the highway closed while crews work on hot spots.

Hours earlier, county officials announced the rental of another fire helicopter in preparation for the fall season when Santa Ana winds are likely to arrive.

All fire agencies in San Diego County are at peak staffing right now according to Cal Fire in San Diego Fire Chief Tony Mecham. He said that will remain true until significant rain falls.
