Crews battled a 2.5-acre brush fire that burned near Cowles Mountain off State Route 52 Sunday afternoon.
Sparks from a passing car's faulty catalytic converter started the fire, according to fire crews.
The fire broke out around 3:17 p.m. by eastbound SR-52 near the Mast Boulevard exit and was out by 5 p.m. The location is close to Mission Trails Regional Park.
The fire moved up the hillside from the south side of the 52 toward the Fortuna Trail at Mission Trails Park, San Diego Fire-Rescue said.
The incident commander Battalion Chief Gerboth called for many resources immediately, which allowed the fire to be put out quickly, according to officials.
Two helicopters were called for water drops but one was canceled. No trail in the area is closed or was evacuated.
Lanes on SR-52 were closed but have since reopened.
