Brown Brings Back The Bats

Padres Erupt For 11 Runs Against The Cubs

The Padres brought back their brown 1984 jerseys on Friday night against the Cubs. Is it a coincidence the Friars put up their biggest run total of the season?

Probably. But it's fun to think their 11-1 win was actually a product of high fashion.

The Padres are not known for fast starts, but against Chicago starter Edwin Jackson they broke loose early.

In the first inning, Seth Smith hit a 2-run single and Yonder Alonso drilled a 2-run home run, his second of the year, to put the Padres up 4-0.

Four runs in the first inning are the most for the Padres in the opening inning of a game since they scored four April 16. Of 2013 (at Dodger Stadium). It was the most runs scored by the Padres in the first inning in a game at Petco Park since September 14, 2012 against the Rockies.

In the second inning, Yasmani Grandal hammered his fifth home run of the season and Chase Headley hit a 2-run double to put the Padres up 7-0.

Get this ... it's just the second time since Petco Park opened in 2004 that the Padres scored three or more runs in each of the first two innings of a game at home. The last time was August 17, 2004 against Atlanta (five in the first, three in the second).

Cameron Maybin chipped in with two doubles, scoring three runs and raising his season average to an even .300.

On the mound, Padres starter Tim Stauffer was fantastic. Coming out of the bullpen to take the spot left when Robbie Erlin went on the disabled list, Stauffer was on a pitch count. The Padres were hoping to get three or four good innings out of him.

Stauffer went five full, giving up two hits, no runs and striking out five, saving the Padres bullpen that might be tested again on Saturday.

The Padres are leaving Donn Roach in the bullpen and calling Billy Buckner up from Triple-A El Paso. Buckner was signed to a minor league contract in April after not getting an invitation to a single Major League Spring Training.

Buckner was 3-2 in five starts with El Paso. Saturday would have been his spot in the Chihuahuas rotation, so he'll be going on full rest.
