When the Padres offense is bad, it's historically bad. When The Padres offense is good, they win.
That was proven again Saturday night in Colorado. The Padres racked up 10 hits, six of them for extra bases, to beat the Rockies 8-5 at Coors Field.
Seth Smith and Carlos Quentin both hit 2-run home runs. Yonder Alonso hit a pair of doubles and drove in two runs. Even starting pitcher Robbie Erlin had a pair of singles and drove in a run (Erlin's first hits and RBI of the season).
On the mound, Erlin allowed four runs on nine hits in five innings. It could have been worse, but Robbie induced four double play balls. The Padres turned a franchise record-tying five double plays in the game.
Nick Vincent, Dale Thayer, Joaquin Benoit and Huston Street each threw an inning to help Erlin get the win. We've said it before, and it's true. With their pitching staff, the Padres don't need much offense to win.
San Diego is now 15-1 when scoring at least four runs.
The Friars did receive bad news before the game. Opening Day starter Andrew Cashner was placed on the 15-day disabled list with soreness in his right (pitching) elbow. Cashner does not think it's a ligament problem and thinks the time off will help the inflammation go away.

Rookie Donn Roach will come out of the bullpen to make his first MLB start in Cashner's absence on Sunday in Denver.
