Bedroom Fire Injures Man in City Heights

A fire at a City Heights apartment complex early Wednesday morning sent one man to the hospital, according to officials.

Around 2:15 a.m. fire crews arrived to the apartment on 4174 Malborough Ave. and saw a lot of heavy smoke, then noticed a fire in a bedroom.

When firefighters searched the apartment after the blaze was extinguished, they noticed a man inside one of the rooms unconscious. They had to use "aggressive, life-saving measures" on the injured man, according to officials. The victim barely had a pulse when he was found.

Crews pulled him out to a safe area and rushed him to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

The victim is at UCSD Medical center in acute condition, according to officials. Firefighters said they noticed him inside the apartment after they extinguished the fire.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause, saying the cause of the fire is not obvious but it looks like it started in a closet. Arson investigators went to the two-story complex as a precaution.

No one else in this apartment was affected by the fire. They were temporarily evacuated but were able to go back inside.

The investigation is ongoing.
