Truck Driver Unaware of Killing Pedestrian: PD

Glenn Tanida’s badly injured body was found on Appian Drive Sept. 30

Preliminary investigative results reveal that a semi-truck driver is not facing charges after running over and killing a man in Bay Terraces two months ago, NBC 7 has learned.

Information released to NBC 7 by the San Diego Police Department reveal suggest the death of 48-year-old Glenn Tanida in September may have been accidental.

At this time, investigators believe Tanida was the primary person at fault for the accident and was discovered to have a blood alcohol level of .22, which may have been a contributing factor.

Tanida’s badly injured body was found on Appian Drive just after 10 p.m. on Sept. 30. It was clear Tanida had been dragged several hundred feet by a vehicle, officials said.

Because the driver did not stop, the case was initially investigated as a hit-and-run collision.

Police say, at this time, it does not appear the driver of the tractor trailer realized he had been involved in an accident. They cite a variety of factors including the nature of the collision, the size and noise associated with the truck as well as the lighting conditions and height of the driver position.

Keith Logan lives in the area where the accident happened and told NBC 7 the driving conditions are very dark. He said he could understand how the driver did not see Tanida before the impact.

“You wouldn’t be able to see anybody until you got eye view, real close,” he said. Logan said he does wonder, however, how the driver didn’t notice hitting someone.

“You got to hear a thump and when you hear a thump... I don’t know how fast he was driving, but I know it’s very dark on this street,” he said.

The police department is waiting on additional lab results before a final determination is made.

NBC 7 spoke to Tanida’s brother and mother. They said they just learned about these new developments and felt it was too early to comment.
