Baseball Star Critically Injured in Crash

A head-on collision left a baseball player from Valley Center High School with critical injuries and spilled hazardous materials that closed Highway 76 in an unincorporated part of the county for several hours Saturday morning.

California Highway Patrol officers responded to a call at 7 a.m. about the collision near Gird Road, said Officer Chris Parent with the Oceanside CHP office. A westbound pest-control pickup driven by a 35-year-old Oceanside resident lost traction, careened into eastbound traffic and hit a silver Dodge Ram driven by Conrad Murphy, 19, from Fallbrook.

The teenager was flown by helicopter to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido and, as of Saturday afternoon, was in critical condition, Parent said. The Oceanside man, who reportedly suffered minor injuries, also was taken to a local hospital.
