Babysitter Arrested in Ramona Baby's Death

An eight-month-old baby was fatally injured Wednesday

A 19-year-old babysitter was arrested Monday following the death of an 8-month-old in Ramona, San Diego County sheriff's deputies said.

Eight-month old Liliana Velasquez was critically injured July 4 in a home on Southern Oak Road east of Mount Woodson in Ramona.

Velasquez was transported by air to Rady Children’s Hospital. On Friday, she died from her injuries.

Monday deputies announced the arrest Valasquez' 19-year-old babysitter, David Humberto Ortiz.

Ortiz came in to the department voluntarily for questioning. He was the only person in the home at the time of the injury, said Homicide Lieutenant Larry Nesbit with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Ortiz was arrested and booked into San Diego Central Jail. He now faces charges of first degree murder and assault of a child.

Detectives with the San Diego County Sheriff's Child Abuse Unit, Sheriff’s Homicide Detail and Sheriff’s Crime Lab are investigating the baby’s death. The cause of death is still unknown.

On Wednesday, a maintenance worker at the Ramona home said he was on the property that morning when a man ran out and told him that the baby had rolled off the couch, onto the floor and passed out. He said the couple has two daughters – the eight-month-old and a three-year-old.

The mother, who works as a cook at a restaurant, was not home at the time of the incident said the worker who asked not to be identified.
