Baby Gorilla Celebrates First Birthday

Monroe was presented with a cake made of fruits and vegetables

The San Diego Zoo's Safari Park celebrated the first birthday of its youngest gorilla on Friday.

Monroe, the officially 1-year-old gorilla, was presented a cake made of fruits, vegetables and ice in honor of his birthday.

Overnight campers from the park's Snore and Roar program sang "Happy Birthday" when Monroe entered the enclosure on Friday morning.

Monroe was born to two of the gorillas in the exhibit, Winston and Kokamo. The western lowland gorillas are currently listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Safari Park will continue Monroe's big birthday celebration into the weekend with more "cake" and presents.
