Aztecs Ride Defense To MWC Co-Championship

SDSU is one of the best defensive teams in college basketball

San Diego State plays good defense. You may have heard that a few times this year. But, here's a bit of perspective on just HOW GOOD the Aztecs are at keeping the other team from scoring.

SDSU is second in the nation in points allowed per game, just behind 3rd-ranked Virginia and just ahead of Top-ranked (and undefeated) Kentucky.

The Aztecs might not score in bunches, but nobody is going to run away from them, and that makes them dangerous come tournament time. SDSU won a share of the Mountain West Conference regular season championship with Saturday night's 67-43 win over Nevada that was typical of their season:

In 14 of their 18 conference games, the Aztecs held their opponent to less than 60 points.

On Thursday San Diego State opens the MWC tournament as the #2 seed behind regular season co-champ Boise State. Steve Fisher's group will play the winner of Wednesday's game between Nevada and UNLV.

Aztecs get frustrated watching their offense, but not nearly as frustrated as other teams get playing against the SDSU defense. On Monday, Coach Fisher shared where his defense-first philosophy came from.
