Aztecs Prepare For NCAA Tournament

One area in-particular needs addressing

San Diego State's men's basketball team left for Charlotte, NC on Wednesday afternoon. The Aztecs play their first NCAA Tournament game at 6:40 (San Diego time) on Friday night against St. John's University.

Before boarding the bus, SDSU held one final shootaround at Viejas Arena. One of the things they did a lot of is practice free throws. They make just 62.9% of their shots from the free throw line, making them the worst free throw shooting team in the entire NCAA Tournament field.

Close games are common in March, and too many missed foul shots can knock a team out in a hurry.

If defense does, indeed, win championships, give this game to SDSU. St. John's ranks 202nd in the nation in scoring defense. San Diego State is 2nd.

However, if you think the team with superior firepower will prevail, go with the guys from New York. The Johnnies have the superior offense, ranking 77th in the nation in points per game while the Aztecs are 300th (out of 345 Division-1 schools).

Aztecs head coach Steve Fisher gave his team a pre-practice pep talk. Listen to what he said, and you understand one of the many reasons he's built a national program on Montezuma Mesa.
