Aztecs Go Ice Cold In Wyoming

SDSU's Shooting Woes Continue

Last Saturday, San Diego State played Colorado State at Viejas Arena. The Aztecs had one of their best shooting halves of all time, making 10 of 18 shots from 3-point land.

I don't know what happened during halftime of that game, but something changed. It got really bad Saturday in Laramie, Wyoming.

In the first half against the Cowpokes, SDSU scored just 9 points. They took 24 shots and only made 4 of them, going 0-8 from 3-point range. Keep in mind, the Aztecs average 72 points a game. Interestingly, head coach Steve Fisher was not entirely surprised at his team's dismal start.

“It starts with preparation," said Fisher. "It didn’t appear that we had from the opening tip. I didn’t feel an excitement or an energy in the locker room that you have to have. We didn’t appear as if we had an edge about us. They [Wyoming] had that. I could sense that from the opening tip."

Their 2nd half was slightly better. If there is a silver lining, the Aztecs did play good defense, and only ended up losing 58-45. Since their epic first half against CSU, San Diego State has gone into a shooting slump that is just as amazing.

In the 2nd half and overtime against the Rams, the Aztecs made just 3 of 11 shots from 3-point land. In their loss to UNLV, they shot 3 of 19. Then against the Pokes, it was 2 for 18. Add it up, and they've only made 8 of their last 48 shots from 3-point land (16.6%).

Coach Fisher was, obviously, not happy. But the good thing is their biggest problem in Wyoming is one that's easily fixable.

“We got outfought. We didn’t make shots, but that’s going to happen. I can live with not making shots. But when you get outfought, and out-toughed and out-efforted, that’s inexcusable. And it starts with me."

Their next chance to snap the slump is Wednesday in Nevada.
