Arrested Twice in Connection With Grandmother's Death

A Fallbrook woman was in custody Saturday facing charges in the death of her 74-year-old grandmother last September, a San Diego Sheriff's Department sergeant said.

Amy Jo Mitchell, 33, was arrested Friday in connection with the death of Shirley Ann Beggs, 74, said Sgt. Roy Frank.

According to officials, Beggs was found dead in her Potter Street apartment in Fallbrook on Sept. 4. Deputies were doing a welfare check on the elderly woman when they found her decomposing body.

The next day, Mitchell was arrested and booked on a charge of financial abuse of an elder but was shortly released, according to officials.

Authorities also named Mitchell's common-law husband, Jeff Nolen, as a suspect.  But on Sept. 9, Nolen was found dead in his vehicle in Riverside County.  A San Diego County prosecutor said Nolan confessed to Beggs' slaying in a suicide note.

On Friday, Mitchell was arrested on suspicion of the following charges: accessory to a felony, elder financial abuse, burglary, false report to a law enforcement officer, and possession of a controlled substance.

The Sheriff's Department is asking anyone with information about the investigation to call Homicide Detail at (858) 974-2321 or (858) 565-5200 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
