San Diego County has nearly $330,000 in unclaimed refunds and they want the public to search the database to see who is owed money, officials said.
When the county can’t locate property taxpayers or others who may have previously owned property in the County of San Diego in the past five years, they add the refund to an “unclaimed monies list.”
Anyone who may have done business with the county or paid property tax in the past four years may have unclaimed money.
“I feel like the Maytag repairman,” San Diego County Treasurer and Tax Collector Dan McAllister in a statement. “We are waiting for people to claim these funds so that we can refund the money we owe. Time is running out and sadly very few members of the public have stepped forward to claim their funds.”
Sometimes the refunds have been sent to the last known mailing address on file. Other times, checks return uncashed.
In July, the County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office announced it had 4,329 unclaimed accounts that amounted to $413,540 in funds.
On Aug. 15, County officials said only 20 percent of the money in the fund had been claimed. The funds that remain amount of approximately $328,583.66.

If the funds are not claimed by Sept. 8, the money will be returned to the County's General Fund.
