Fire Injures Man Living in Mom's Garage

A man was hospitalized for smoke inhalation after the garage he was living in caught fire overnight.

Firefighters arrived to the multiple-story apartment building on Ariane Drive in North Clairemont around 11 p.m. Wednesday.

"We had some difficulty getting the garage door open. But once that was open we were able to get in and get the fire out, the upstairs relatively undamaged,” said Batt. Chief John Strock with San Diego Fire Rescue.

A man had been living in the garage in the unit owned by his mother. Firefighters say they rescued the man from the flames but he was said to have suffered smoke inhalation.

As for where the victim's mother and a neighbor will have to go authorities say they can't live in their home now, and will have to find another place to stay.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
