Another Lobster Poacher Pinched

Man seen near south Mission Beach was caught with 46 lobsters

Another man who didn't get the message the first time he was caught poaching lobsters was sentenced to jail time.

Jason Bryan Chavez was given a 120-day sentence and placed on probation last week for his second conviction for poaching lobsters. Thirty days of Chavez's sentence will be suspended if he successfully completes probation.

Chavez pleaded guilty last week in connection with the case. He was caught May 18 with 46 lobsters in the trunk of his car. Investigators said he was spotted at about 2 a.m. going back and forth from his car, which was parked near the jetty in south Mission Beach, with a full backpack, then returning with an empty backpack.

All 46 lobsters were returned to the ocean by San Diego lifeguards.

Earlier this month, Binh Chau was given a 90-day sentence Wednesday for his third conviction in 18 months for poaching lobsters from the La Jolla Underwater park. The park is a protected state marine conservation area.
